Reapplication for receiving an assistive device (AD)

When can one reapply?

One can reapply for receiving an assistive device (AD) in the following cases:

  • Expiration of the assistive device usage term

  • Change in health condition
    If the type or severity of functional impairment has changed and the existing AD is no longer suitable.

     

  • The assistive device has become unusable
    If a specialist or service provider has determined that the AD is no longer usable (does not apply to intentional damage or improper use).
     

  • Change in body dimensions
    If due to changes in body dimensions, the previously received assistive device can no longer be used comfortably or safely.

What documents are needed for reapplying for an AD?

The application process is the same as for the first time, adding the documents listed below.

Required documents

Introduction To apply for receiving an assistive device, specific documents are required. Here you will find information on what needs to be submitted and who prepares them. 

  1. Opinion for receiving an assistive device:

The opinion is prepared in the E-health system by:

  • a family doctor,

  • or the treating physician,

  • or a certified specialist (occupational therapist, physiotherapist, technical orthopedist, audiologist).

  1. Application for receiving an AD

The application must be filled out, signed, and submitted to the Vaivari Technical Aids Centre. 

If the application is signed by an authorized person, a copy of the authorization must be attached.

Documents for urgent cases (if applicable)

If TPL is needed urgently, an additional document must be attached to the application that certifies this right.

Depending on the situation, it may be:

  • First-time functional disorders – extract from the medical record or epikrisis (not older than 6 months)

  • Predictable disability – individual rehabilitation plan indicating urgency

  • Education at an educational institution – certificate from the educational institution (does not apply to care, protection, household and space adaptation assistive devices)

  • Employment relationships – employer's certificate (document not older than 1 month)

  • Self-employment / economic activity – taxpayer registration number and company name (does not apply to care, protection, household and space adaptation assistive devices)

Additional documents in certain cases

Some technical aids require additional documents. 

Functional bed, anti-decubitus mattress or bed table

Required:

Oxygen concentrator rental for a chronic patient

A pulmonologist or cardiologist's opinion is required in E-health.

Long-term oxygen therapy at home

CPAP / APAP therapy devices 

Additionally, the following must be submitted:

  • a copy of the examination results with the AHI indicator.

  • The examination must be performed with polysomnography or polygraphy.

Assistive devices for sports

A confirmation from the Latvian Paralympic Committee is required for regular sports activities when applying for:

  • a bi-manual sports wheelchair,

  • an upper or lower limb prosthesis.

Conclusion Document submission

Once the documents are prepared, they must be submitted to the Vaivari Technical Aids Centre:

  • In paper format – signed by hand (originals)

  • Electronically – signed with a secure e-signature
